One of the things I’ve learned over the years is that we can’t forget about the younger generation. Many of us have spent years building this industry, but keeping it strong means getting kids and young adults excited about whitetails and giving them opportunities to be part of it.
That has always been a passion of mine. We collect antlers from across Oklahoma and use them as a way to teach kids about whitetails. Over the years, that effort has grown into giving away antlers, fishing poles, BB guns, deer skulls and other items to kids who come through our booth. People throughout the industry have stepped up and donated to help us keep it going.
We also encourage youth and first-time hunters. After all these years, my favorite trophy picture isn’t me standing beside a big buck—it’s standing beside a kid with their first buck. That’s what I call a true trophy.
The same people who helped and encouraged me when I was getting started taught me how important it is to pass that knowledge along. Now it’s our turn.
Whether it’s an antler, a first hunt, a little advice or simply taking the time to get a kid interested, we all have something we can give back.
Because those kids aren’t just enjoying the deer industry today. … They’re the ones who will carry it into the future!
